Tupamaro: Urban Guerrillas

The award-winning film chronicles the life of Alberto “Chino” Carias, the infamous leader of a vigilante “colectivo” from the slums of Caracas, Venezuela.

Once accused of robbing banks and killing cops, Chino sheds his outlaw reputation and takes a post in Hugo Chavez’s government. But after Chavez dies, the country’s struggling economy collapses.

In the absence of true law and order, Chino clings to his contradictory roles as saint and executioner.

Chávez

Chávez is a documentary based on the public and political life of the Venezuelan Ex-President from the day of the rebellion he commanded on February 4th, 1992 until his death on March 2013.

Aimed primarily to the understanding of international audiences, the documentary presents the ideological origins of Hugo Chávez which led him to challenge the political schemes in Venezuela during the early 90s.

His rise to the presidency in 1999, his opponents obstacles leading to the coup d’etat in 2002 which ended with his return to Caracas supported by the low class Venezuelan society.

Chávez shows the leader consolidating social projects in Venezuela while portraying the human side of a president who broke the mould.

His contribution to the integration of Latin America and its affiliation with other international actors that supported ideas of sovereignty and anti-imperialist struggle.

Chávez takes us to the crucial time of his illness and how it evolved without the Bolivarian leader putting aside his duties to the point of winning a new presidential election in 2012.

He could not exercise this new period and left it in the hands of his political partner Nicolas Maduro, who announced his death on March 5, 2013.

A Whisper to a Roar

Whisper to a Roar presents the inspiring and dangerous work of democracy activists in five countries around the world – Egypt, Malaysia, Ukraine, Venezuela and Zimbabwe.

The film’s subjects span the full spectrum of democratic activists: student leaders (Venezuela); young professionals (Egypt); currently active opposition politicians (Malaysia and Zimbabwe) and a former president (Ukraine). These heroes tell their compelling personal stories of struggle with the oppressive regimes ruling their countries, now or in the past.

The activists come from a variety of cultures and live on different continents, yet they all take enormous risks to pursue political freedom for their people and aspire for accountable government. In each country, the regimes and rulers that oppress their people use remarkably similar techniques and the activists’ most successful techniques are also remarkably alike, regardless of their circumstances.

The presence in the film of accomplished democrats, both the famous and the unsung, from diverse cultures and religions, will inspire and instruct viewers around the world of widely varying ages, nationalities, and political persuasions.
